Is there such a thing as “food addiction”?
Yes. If you are craving certain foods, and you need to have it is most likely you are addicted to that food, especially “sugar” or “Salt” which includes simple carbohydrates too.
For example; if you love cheese then you are addicted to the product in the milk called casein (a protein) that effects your brain like morphine so they call it “casomorphine”. Now you have to reward your brain’s “reward center”. Any processed food may effect our brain reward center accordingly despite explaining all the chemical compounds involved in this transition, it is better to fix the addiction and we can help you to achieve that with herbal and Wholefood supplements.
Here is what happens to us in a simple analogy:
Imagine your organs are like your car driving, you have a gas pedal and a brake. So you accelerate, what is your RPM reading 4-5? Then you come to a steady speed reaching 40 mph now your RPM is 2. how much gas do you use when your RPM is 4-5? How much gas do you use when your RPM is 2?
High RPM uses more gas, which means you eat more. Lower RPM (RPM 2) uses less gas, which means you eat less.
High speed in your body is triggered by your adrenal gland and it is called the “fight and flight” stress response gland. Continuation of exposure to stress causes your gas tank to always get empty so you need to fill it up.
What happens when you get adapted? Yes – you gain weight.
According to Dr. Hans Selye, there are 3 phases you go through:
Phase I Alarm Phase (1-3 months)
Cortisol and DHEA increase, sympathetic dominance. Grab a cup of coffee, skip breakfast, run all day long. When you are young, you don’t notice this stage very much. Stressed and wired.
Phase II Resistance phase (6-9 months)
Cortisol keeps increasing and now DHEA starts to decline, still in sympathetic dominance. Anxiety or panic attacks, “I just feel absolutely stressed out.” High blood pressure. Can’t get up in the morning or sleep at night.
Phase III Exhaustion phase (12-18 months)
Cortisol and DHEA flat-line, a dangerous situation with a high rate of death. Parasympathetic dominance with low blood pressure. Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Stressed, tired, exhausted all the time.
